LANSING, Mich. - Organizers for Creative Cities Summit 2.0, the second International Creative Cities Summit to be held October 13-15 in Detroit, have announced their intention to host an environmentally-friendly conference including keeping track of the conference’s carbon footprint and committing to following best sustainability practices.
“Being thoughtful and proactive stewards of the environment is integral to Creative Cities Summit 2.0’s overall mission,” said Peter Kageyama, Co-Director of Creative Cities Summit 2.0. “As part of our effort we have appointed “Green Guru” Laura Rauwerda of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to help us meet this commitment and are collaborating with vendors including the Marriott Renaissance Center to minimize our carbon footprint.”
Kageyama added that organizers are integrating the use of carbon footprint calculators into all aspects of the conference and plan to donate any carbon savings to a worthwhile non-profit organization.
“We are looking forward to hosting a stellar international conference and helping the environment at the same time by passing on our carbon savings to a cause that is in keeping with the creative cities movement and our commitment to help foster sustainable communities,” said Kageyama.
Creative Cities Summit 2.0 is a next-generation look at how communities around the world are integrating innovation, social entrepreneurship, sustainability, arts & culture and business to make vibrant economies.
The summit brings together change agents including architects, designers, urban planners, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, students, educators and community leaders to share their experiences, projects, successes and failures as together we re-imagine our cities.
The Summit will be held in downtown Detroit Oct. 13-15. Summit topics will include: Developing Entrepreneurship & Talent, Creating a Sense of Place, Encouraging Diversity of Thinking and of Being, Establishing Green and Sustainable Communities.
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) Cool Cities initiative, part of the MSHDA Urban Revitalization division, is a key organizer for the conference. The initial Creative Cities Summit held in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2004, was one of the first creative economy events in the United States.
