A frequent guest lecturer on community success strategies with state municipal leagues and other regional and national community conferences, Ivan has conducted research on community sustainability, including a 2004 study entitled "Can Small Towns Be Cool?" and a 2002 USDA Rural Development study entitled "Small Town Success Strategies."
His current research and outreach activities involve working with communities to create a community environment that supports entrepreneurship and business enterprise development. He serves as a member of the Michigan State University economic development, community development and land use area of expertise teams, and has served as a statewide trainer with the Michigan Economic Developers Association.
